Austin ropes new Southwest-inspired canned cocktail line from local company - culturemap.com

Whether its the omnipresent White Claw or boozy sippers from locally owned Uncle Billy’s Spirits, canned alcoholic drinks are big business. No wonder the team behind farm-to-table food truck Ranch Hand is getting in the game.

On December 20, owners Brain Murphy and Quentin Cantu announced the launch of Ranch Rider Spirits Co. According to a release, the canned cocktails are currently available at select bars throughout Austin and a few independently owned local liquor stores.

Murphy and Cantu were inspired to create the brand after searching for a post-shift drink that was not loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. After extensive taste testing, the duo honed in on three Southwestern flavors made without fake sweeteners, preservatives, or coloring.

Both the lime-forward Ranch Water and grapefruit Tequila Paloma combine sparkling water, citrus juice, and reposado tequila sourced from Jalisco, Mexico. The Chilton starts with four-times distilled vodka mixed with sparkling water, lemon juice, and sea salt.

Each 12-ounce can is under 123 calories, contains less than two grams of sugar, and is gluten-free. Ringing in at a modest six percent alcohol by volume or less, the three flavors also fit in with 2019’s trend toward lower octane, better-for-you spirits.

That trend is increasingly finding footing in the Capital City with brands like Mighty Swell becoming just as ubiquitous in coolers as Lone Star longnecks. Future Proof, formerly known as BeatBox Beverages, launched new hard seltzer Brizzy in August, directly going after the White Claw market.

Ranch Rider is more quietly introducing itself to Austin at spots like The White Horse, Bar Peached, Native Hostel, and newly opened brewery Central Machine Works. In early 2020, the team will expand distribution to larger chains such as Spec’s and Total Wine & More.
